How to Book KTX Tickets in Korea as a Foreigner (2026 Guide)

KTX is usually the fastest and simplest way to travel between Seoul and cities such as Busan, Gyeongju, Daegu, Daejeon, Gangneung, and Jeonju. The train itself is easy. The part that confuses first-time visitors is choosing the correct booking site, station, train type, and payment method.

Quick answer: book through the official KORAIL English website or the KORAIL+ app, use the station written on your ticket, and save the mobile ticket or confirmation before travel day. Foreign-issued cards are supported through the official visitor-facing channels, although individual bank authorization can still fail. For busy Fridays, Sundays, holidays, and festival periods, book as soon as your date becomes available.

The safest booking routine: check the route on the official KORAIL site, compare individual tickets with any rail pass, pay with a foreign card, then screenshot the train number, station, departure time, car, and seat.

Where foreigners can book KTX tickets

Booking method Best for Payment and ticket What to watch
KORAIL English website Most visitors planning before the trip International-card payment and online confirmation Use the official domain and confirm the exact station
KORAIL+ app Booking and managing tickets on a phone Mobile booking and ticket access Complete language and card setup before departure day
Station counter or machine Same-day help or a failed online payment Foreign cards are accepted at counters and supported machines Your preferred train may already be sold out
Authorized travel platform A familiar language or payment flow Varies by platform; some provide a mobile voucher Compare the final price, change rules, and ticket format

Start with the official KORAIL English reservation page. The Korea Tourism Organization's current train guide for international visitors also lists the KORAIL website, KORAIL+ app, station counters, ticket machines, Naver Train Booking, and Kakao T as purchase channels.

Do not buy from a look-alike website simply because it appears first in search. Third-party booking is not automatically bad, but you should understand whether the price includes a service fee and whether you receive a real mobile ticket, a voucher, or a document that must be exchanged.

When KTX tickets go on sale

Korean train tickets are usually available from one month before departure at 7:00 a.m. Korea time. Online booking generally remains available until shortly before departure, but that does not mean seats will remain.

  • Ordinary weekday: you can often book later, but early booking gives you more train and seat choices.
  • Friday evening or Sunday afternoon: popular Seoul–Busan and Seoul–Gyeongju-area trains can fill quickly.
  • Public holiday or major festival: KORAIL may announce a separate reservation schedule.
  • Chuseok and Lunar New Year: normal one-month timing may not apply. Do not build a trip around an unconfirmed train.

Schedules can change, so use the booking calendar displayed by KORAIL as the final answer for your travel date.

How to book KTX online step by step

1. Open the English reservation page

Select the departure station, arrival station, date, approximate hour, and number of passengers. Choose a direct train unless a transfer is genuinely useful.

2. Check the station, not only the city

This is the most important step. Seoul has several intercity rail stations, and the correct one depends on the route.

  • Seoul Station: the main KTX departure point for Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and many other routes.
  • Yongsan Station: commonly used for Honam-line destinations and some routes toward Jeolla.
  • Cheongnyangni Station: useful for several eastbound routes.
  • Gwangmyeong Station: outside central Seoul; allow extra transfer time.
  • Suseo Station: the principal Seoul terminal for SRT, not a standard KTX departure from Seoul Station.

Do not search only for “Seoul to my destination” and then assume the train leaves from Seoul Station. Read the station name on the result and calculate your hotel-to-platform journey separately. Our Naver Map vs Kakao Map guide explains which local map is more dependable for that transfer.

3. Compare train type and travel time

KTX and KTX-Sancheon are high-speed services, but not every result has the same number of stops. A cheaper conventional train may take much longer. Compare departure time, arrival time, station, transfers, and total duration before choosing.

4. Choose Standard or First Class

Standard Class is comfortable enough for most travelers. First Class gives more space and a quieter cabin but costs more. Some booking screens also let you choose a window or aisle seat and, depending on the train, a forward-facing or backward-facing seat.

If motion direction matters to you, check the seat direction instead of assuming every seat faces forward. Equipment can change, so the actual seat map shown during booking is the best reference.

5. Enter passenger and payment details carefully

Use a name you can recognize on the confirmation and enter the requested contact details accurately. Pay with a foreign-issued credit or debit card that is enabled for overseas online transactions.

If payment fails, do not repeatedly submit the same transaction without checking your banking app. Confirm that the card allows international and online purchases, disable an overly strict fraud block if appropriate, or try another card. A station counter or an authorized platform is a practical backup.

6. Save the ticket information

Keep the ticket or booking confirmation available offline. Save these details:

  • departure and arrival stations
  • travel date and departure time
  • train number
  • car number
  • seat number
  • booking or ticket reference

A screenshot is useful when mobile data is weak, but keep the original ticket in the app, website, email, or platform as well. Follow the ticket instructions if your sales channel requires an exchange or another verification step.

Foreign card payment: what to expect

Foreign-issued cards are accepted through KORAIL's visitor-facing booking options and at station counters and compatible ticket machines. That does not guarantee every card will pass. The issuing bank, 3-D Secure verification, spending limits, browser pop-ups, and fraud controls can all affect approval.

Prepare at least two independent payment methods. Avoid waiting until the last train of the day to discover that your card needs an SMS code sent to a home-country number.

Important: T-money is for local transit such as subways and buses. It is not a replacement for a reserved KTX ticket. Read our T-money guide for local transportation.

KTX vs SRT: do not mix up the tickets

Feature KTX SRT
Operator KORAIL SR
Main Seoul-area terminal Seoul, Yongsan, and other route-dependent stations Suseo
Ticket system KORAIL channels SRT channels
KORAIL PASS Eligible KORAIL services subject to pass rules Not included

Both are high-speed trains on many major corridors, but a KTX ticket does not let you board SRT and an SRT ticket does not let you board KTX. Choose based on the station and schedule that work for your accommodation, not only the advertised travel time.

Is the KORAIL PASS worth it?

The KORAIL PASS is intended for international travelers taking multiple KORAIL journeys. Current visitor guidance lists flexible 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-day options that can be used within a defined period. Seat reservations and eligible trains are governed by the pass rules, and SRT, subways, and some special services are excluded.

A pass is not automatically cheaper. For one Seoul–Busan round trip or a simple one-way journey, compare the real individual fares first. A pass becomes more attractive when you have several long-distance KORAIL trips close together and can actually reserve the trains you want.

Also check the newer KORAIL PASS+ option if you want a pass combined with prepaid transportation and payment functions. Treat those extra functions separately from the KTX seat reservation: you still need to follow the pass instructions and secure a seat.

What to do when the train is sold out

  1. Search earlier and later departures on the same date.
  2. Check another suitable Seoul-area station, but calculate the transfer time.
  3. Compare SRT from Suseo if it serves your destination.
  4. Look at conventional trains if speed is less important.
  5. Ask at a staffed station counter about current availability.
  6. Move the trip to a less crowded time instead of depending on a last-minute cancellation.

Do not buy a ticket for the wrong station or date just because it is the only result left. The cost of missing the train and rebuilding the itinerary is usually greater than changing your plan early.

Arrival navigation tip: After booking your train, save the destination station and check the correct exit and final route. Our Google Maps in Korea guide explains when Google Maps is useful and when Naver Map or Kakao Map is the safer local choice.

How to board KTX without stress

  • Arrive about 20–30 minutes early on your first trip.
  • Check the electronic departure board for the train number and platform.
  • Walk to the section marked for your car number before the train arrives.
  • Board the correct car and sit in the seat printed on the ticket.
  • Keep your ticket accessible for inspection.
  • Use the luggage racks and do not block doors or aisles.

Korean high-speed trains can stop for only a short time. Buy food, use the restroom, and find the platform before boarding begins. If you are reaching the station by subway, remember that the subway platform and KTX boarding area can be far apart inside a large station. See our Korean subway guide for transfer basics.

Short FAQ

Can foreigners book KTX without a Korean phone number?

Yes. Use the international-facing KORAIL booking service or another supported visitor channel. Enter the contact information requested by the booking page and keep access to any email or verification method used.

Do I need to print my KTX ticket?

Usually you can use the ticket or confirmation provided electronically, but the exact requirement depends on where you bought it. If your channel issues a voucher that must be exchanged, follow that instruction. Saving a screenshot does not change the ticket's actual conditions.

Can I choose my seat?

The current KORAIL booking system provides seat-selection functions for supported trains. Available choices depend on the train and remaining inventory.

Can I use T-money to ride KTX?

No. Buy a separate reserved train ticket. T-money is used for ordinary public transportation such as subways and local buses.

How early should I arrive?

For a first trip, 20–30 minutes is comfortable. You need time to find the departure board, platform, car position, and luggage area.

Should I buy a KORAIL PASS?

Only after comparing it with individual tickets for your exact itinerary. It is most useful for several eligible long-distance KORAIL trips, not automatically for every foreign visitor.

Bottom line

Booking KTX as a foreigner is straightforward when you make four checks: use a recognized booking channel, select the correct station, confirm that your foreign card works, and save the train, car, and seat information offline. Book popular times early and compare KTX, SRT, individual fares, and rail passes based on your real itinerary rather than the name that looks most familiar.
